Grapefruits And The Menopause ….

We made the news this week!

An overview is the story is that our gym programmes really help women to navigate the perilous stage of life known as menopause.

Thankfully, there is much more info out there today about how to be your best during this time. But some myths still linger and are hard to shift!

It’s a fact that many people (but especially ladies) attach their self esteem to how they weigh on a scale. And as weight inevitably creeps up during menopause – they’ll resort to bygone methods of some form of dieting and excessive cardio.

**I remember the females in my family living on grapefruits to lose weight way back in the ’70s.** I’m sure you can think of several!

All unfortunately reduce muscle mass – which is already declining, reduce energy levels making life harder and send some people into a downward spiral that’s difficult to stop.

What people REALLY need is to maintain muscle mass, strengthen bones, have better management of body composition and the confidence to lift, bend, twist, carry with less risk of injury – in order to have a better quality of life.

Surely, we’ll all admit that no-one is going to ask us how much we weighed on our death-bed. What we’ll value is the quality of life we had, the memories we made.

At Hurley Fitness, we’re not afraid to take ladies away from the dieting mentality (as much as we can), get them off walking treadmills or running couch to 5k’s and show them the ‘Man-Section’ (the weights area) of the gym is EXACTLY what they should be doing.

How many times have we heard about ladies having “no upper body strength” or asking their husband to lift something from the car or being worried about joining a family walk/hike for fear of keeping up? LOTS.

If we can educate ands guide people to lift safely on our strength personal training programmes in Ely, they, quite literally, become a better version of themselves.

Ladies: get lifting!! Especially if you’re over 40.
