No, I don’t work for Mi5.
But I’m not joking! This is very true. I make a point to travel to gyms all over the UK to become a “member” for the day.
I want to see how their service is, how the gym is laid out, what the hygiene is like, how the coaches operate, what system they use, what equipment they have, what language they use …. even how the place smells! EVERYTHING!!
And I want to see what they’re doing that we can adapt and employ.
This is so useful for us to improve our service at Hurley Fitness and be the best that we can be. And I find it one of the most enjoyable aspects to my job.
Keeping our eye on the ball for the trends that emerge, finding out what helps people the most, staying up to date with what people enjoy (and will therefore keep them consistent).
But as a business owner it allows me to get away from the bubble of the gym at Hurley Fitness in Ely. A change of scene can be wonderful for recharging the batteries and refreshing the mind.
On these travels, I’m pleased to say that I’m often buoyed by the realisation that we’re doing quite well at Hurley Fitness! We can always be better (and will continue to improve) … but we’re pretty good!
Our coaching is to a high standard, we have a decent training system that provides the results we want, we’ve grown a cracking community, the gym looks first class, our social calendar is packed, we have coaches who value continuous education. We simply have to rinse and repeat, and improve what we can along the way.
Believe this or not …….. (Big Reveal)
By far, my MOST VALUABLE takeaway from going undercover in gyms for years is that >>>>> There is no unknown, magical secret to building an exceptional facility that impacts a great number of people.
The best, most successful facilities:
– Know what their core service is (Not tonnes of offerings)
– Understand the people they help the most (not taking anyone with money)
– Stick rigidly to the above (Not getting distracted by fads)
– Be the best they can be (Never settling)
– Always simplify, never complicate (Rinse and repeat the basics).
At Hurley Fitness, this means helping 40+ year old, busy people to get stronger, more toned, fitter, more confident and happier. Simple!
Our secret to success is SIMPLICITY.
Boring. But true! 🙂
If you wish to join a community of 40+ people who support each other, love fitness, help each other and enjoy a great quality of life, drop us a message.
Best wishes,
Kevin.
