The old model of 121 training really has messed up how we think of modern personal training.
Trading time for money: “I cost £X per hour on a poster in a gym”.
(This usually meant filling time with long warm ups and cooling down).
But having the attenti0n, up close and personal, of a fitness professional was worth the investment, way ahead of crowded classes, it was thought.
Personal – in the 121 set up – was where it all began. BUT times have changed.
Aside from ‘results’, people crave CONNECTION with their fitness. They want to be with like-minded, similar people who they enjoy being with.
You might think that this just KILLS the personal aspect.
I’ll be honest, it *could* if not done correctly. It can mean a crowded room, the trainer tells everyone to do the same workout, no deviation from the plan. Nothing taken into consideration. Just ‘pack ’em in’.
But with an attentive coach, with cracking knowledge, personality and good humour and an eye for detail: it works incredibly well.
Check out this recent photo:
Nick (left), in his forties, is a runner who wants to reduces injury and improve performance.
Dom, (centre) in his fifties, wants to stay strong for life and ensure his knee issues are well managed.
Debra (right) in her 70s, came from a yoga background but wanted to learn about strength and conditioning to future proof things and learn a new skill.
Three VERY different people, different stages of life, different goals – >> All able to work together at our personal training gym in Ely.
By simply regressing or progressing (making easier or harder) on our personal exercise library, everyone feels safe and gets what they need.
A program tailored to each individual, when required!
- No-one standing at the back of the class wondering what’s going on. They’re receiving advice.
- Nobody copying someone across the room, matching weights. They receive recommendations.
- Everyone safe and feeling successful.
BONUS: Small group PT provides its own natural accountability. You form a routine, see the same people each week. They might ask if you’ll be there next week. You agree ….
Rather than leaving a gym visit in the hands of the Gods (when you feel motivated. Doh!).
So – small group personal training is DEFINITELY personal. And worthwhile. 🙂
